As a trend in the homosexuality debate continues to rise in Uganda, the leader of the National Unity Platform Party, Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, is in the spotlight after he recently signed another memorandum of understanding with renown gay promoters from the West.

A credible source has confirmed that a few weeks ago while in the US, Kyagulanyi held an extensive meeting with Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg, the United States secretary of transportation, and resolved on strategies to escalate a series of gay activities in Uganda in 2023.

Buttigieg Pete had previously engaged with Kyagulanyi in various international conferences on the promotion of gay community rights across the world, including the 2022 engagement in Italy.

In 2021, Pete Buttigieg became the first openly gay person to be confirmed to a cabinet post as the secretary for transportation.

This is the latest gay-promoting memorandum of understanding to be signed by Bobi Wine following the September 2022 agreement, which he signed to promote, protect, and popularize the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex persons (LGBTQ) around the world.

In the memorandum, Kyagulanyi was also tasked with enhancing gay activities and popularizing them in various schools in Uganda through his ghetto youth network.

“I am humbled that you have trusted me to be an ambassador of the minority; they are human beings, and their lives matter,” said Bobi Wine.

Recently, the parliament formed a select committee to investigate.

Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, tasked the Parliament’s Committee on Education to expeditiously probe the recent claim of widespread gay activities in schools and report back to the House with its findings.

“Some of the children and parents are dying in silence. So, the Committee on Education, this is a matter you have to give urgent priority to. It is an issue that we must tackle head-on without fearing anyone,” he said.

A source close to Bobi Wine who preferred anonymity revealed how the NUP party president, Kyagulanyi, had received huge funding last year.

“Bobi Wine received a lot of money for this project; he has formed a huge network among vulnerable teenagers through his ghetto youth mobilizers across the country,” said the source.

Bobi wine in the monitor publications of July 30th 2014 is reported to have made his stand on the issue of homosexuality, where he decried people attacking him for supporting the group.

“I am personally not out to threaten the life of any individual based on their sexual orientation,” said Bobi Wine.

The Church of Uganda recently threatened to break away from the Church of England should they go ahead and allow same-gender preachers and marriages.

Of the 72 countries worldwide that criminalize homosexuality, 32 of them are in Africa including, where punishments range from imprisonment to the death penalty in countries such as Mauritania and Sudan.

Around 93% of sub-Saharan Africans are either Christian (63%) or Muslim (30%), making the continent one of the most religious in the world.

These beliefs influence many facets of people’s lives, including their attitudes to agreeing and living as gays.

In Uganda, homosexuality is categorized among unnatural offenses that include whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, under section 145 of the Penal Code Act.
