A number of government aided schools within West Nile and Northern Uganda have remained closed as teachers’ strike over pay rise enters the third week.
Despite government attempts to engage with UNATU to halt the strike, teachers in the above regions have remained hesitant to resume classes until their demand is met.
Previously, government through the Ministry of public service had issued directive to all teachers resume work by June 25th or risk being scrapped off from the payroll.
On Monday, our reporters visited some schools within Lira district including Ayago Primary School in Lira City East Division but the facility had been locked.
At Aswa Camp Primary School in Gulu District, only 3 teachers out of 11 reported for work while at Abaka Primary School, only 1 teacher turned up on Monday.
Dr. Abdi Jamal the Senior Education Officer of Yumbe District, Lochomgbo , Legu , Obero , Iyete and Kurunga Primary Schools all in Romogi Sub-County, Yumbe District remained closed with no turn up from both learners and teachers.
According to him, Barakala, Swinga, Obero West and Alipi East Primary Schools in Barakala town council were partially operating since they were only handling candidate class.
