GOVERNMENT TO REDEVELOP KILEMBE MINES.

Cabinet has approved a resolution to redevelop the Kilembe Mines in Kasese western Uganda, which are estimated to contain 4 million tonnes of ore.

This was revealed by the Government’s Spokesperson Ofono Opondo on Tuesday 02/04/2019 in a statement he issued about cabinet’s decision taken during a seating on 01/04/2019.

According to the statement, Cabinet has approved the redevelopment of Kilembe Mines with objectives to rehabilitate the assets and resuscitation of Kilembe miningoperations so as to contribute to the general  economic development  of the Kilembe /Kasese  area and undertake  further mineral exploration  to add to the known reserve base, thereby enhancing the viability of mining operations.

Kilembe was once a major producer of copper and cobalt before it was abandoned by Canadian firm Falconbridge in the 1970s when Uganda’s economy stagnated under the erratic leadership of dictator Idi Amin Dada.

According to Uganda’s Department of Geological Survey and Mines,the ore in Kilembe mine is estimated to be 1.98 percent pure copper and 0.17 percent cobalt.

The document further reveals that there will be an immediate exploration  of the ascertained mineral ore reserves and resources attract  Private  Sector Capital, Management , and  technical  expertise , with  a commitment  to install  efficient  and modern  technology  to maximize the future  Kilembe Mines Limited  operating results.

When contacted, Evelyn Anite, the state minister for investment and privatization More than 20 companies have expressed interest in the tender.
