Uganda’s Leonard Chemutai Claims Gold in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 23rd Edition of  CAA Championships

Uganda started by winning two medals at the 23rd edition of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Championship in Douala, Cameroon, on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

Uganda’s Leonard Chemutai clocked 8:21:29 to win a gold medal in the 3000m men’s steeplechase race, ahead of Kenya’s Edmond Serem and Mathew Kosgei, who settled for silver and bronze with a time of 8:21:94 and 8:21:98, respectively.

However, another Ugandan, Elphas Toroitich, finished in the 8th position with a time of 8:43:91.

Tom Dradiga took up the bronze in the 800-meter race, finishing 1:46:69 behind the winners, Alex Kipngetich Ngeno of Kenya, and Hainguira Kethobogile of Lesotho, who finished in 1:45:54 and 1:45:54, respectively.

In other races, Uganda’s Haron Adoli finished fifth with a time of 45:62 (400 m), and the gold medal was won by Senegal’s Diouf Tidiana Cheikh with a time of 46:23.

For the 400-meter women’s final, Uganda’s Shida Leni (53:50) came in 7th, and the race was won by South African Miranda Coetzee (51:16), ahead of Zambian Qincy Malekani’s 51:56 and Nigeria’s Joseph Elo’s 51:94.

In the women’s 800m, Uganda’s Susan Aneno finished 7th with 2:02:54 and was won by Kenya’s Sarah Moraa Orobi (2:00:27), ahead of countrymate Lillian Odira (2:00:36), and Mauritius’s Hajji Souaina took bronze with a time of 2:00:91.

The races and field events continue on Monday, June 24, 2024.
