UCC Weekly Update for 17th – 24th February

Uganda Internet Exchange Point (UIXP) stakeholder meeting hosted by UCC to discuss the governance and management structure. The industry focus group task force/committee presented the proposed governance and management structure.

In attendance, among others were telecom, operators, ISPs, MOICT & NG and UCC.UCC participated in a 3day national consultative workshop for the removal of restrictions on trade in services within the East African Community. The consultation was organized EAC secretariat in partnership with GIZ.

UCC is participating in the World Radio Conference preparatory meeting (CPM) in Geneva. WRC-19 shall take place in Nov 2019 in Egypt.

Key aspects being discussed is the identification of International Mobile Telecommunication (IMT) spectrum allocation to accommodate emerging technologies like 5G, orbital satellite spectrum allocations and satellite launching procedures among others.The Commission hosted a delegation from the Regulatory Authority of Malawi (MACRA) on a benchmarking visit covering;

Programs that the Commission has implemented to boost ICT Penetration in Rural Areas.

The Licensing Framework especially on Broadcasting and Postal Services. Performance Management System that the Commission is using for Staff Appraisals.

The Commission also hosted a delegation from the Universal Access Fund of Sierra Leone (GIFEC) on a benchmarking visit of the Rural Communication Development Funds (RCDF) projects.

The East African Communications Organization (EACO) and UCC organized a Stakeholders Forum on Regional Cooperation and Initiatives in the ICT Sector.

The forum created a unique opportunity for EACO members and stakeholders to interact, network, exchange and share experiences on the Initiatives in the ICT Sector and other related issues in the region.

Participants included; Telecoms, broadcasters, postal, courier, the academia and consumers of ICT services in Uganda.
