Security authorities in Lamwo district have foiled a fake bursary scheme, and as a result, two suspects are currently being investigated.

The suspects are Proscovia Aling and Jackline Angwech, both residents of the area.

A source in security revealed that the duo was arrested last week after their scheme was blocked by the Palabek Gem sub-county’s local leaders as they attempted to obtain a letter of recommendation allowing their operation.

The suspects had expected to be permitted by the local authority to start collecting money from the would-be beneficiaries.

The LC3 chairperson of Palabek Gem sub-county, Joel Watoker, stated that the duo failed to identify themselves by any document introducing them as employees of the said organization and a Memorandum of Understanding with the district.

Watoker added that when he asked Angwech for proper identification, she quickly said they would no longer work in the sub-county.

According to Watoker, the duo listed 16 learning institutions, from primary to university, where the learners would study.

“According to the bursary form, the applicant has to pay 5,000 shillings for filling out the form and another 50,000 shillings for other benefits during the course,” he said.

Watoker cautioned parents to be vigilant of scam bursaries and encouraged them to work hard.

The OC of the Palabek Gem police post, Patrick Ongom, confirmed the detention of the suspects, adding that more investigation is underway to ascertain their illegal operations.
