The Ministry of Education and Sports has set June 2023 as the deadline for schools to register their teaching and non-teaching staff on the Education Management Information System (EMIS) portal.

EMIS is a digital data system that provides timely statistics and information for policy development, planning, budgeting and evidence-based management practices in Uganda’s Education and Sports sector. It also captures details of both teaching and non-teaching staff.

According to Ketty Lamaro, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, schools have been given up to June this year to have uploaded data on their teaching and non-teaching staffand those who fail will be considered non-existent.

“EMIS is not an option, registration is a must and we had indicated that sanctions will be extended to those that do not comply. You have been given a deadline of June this year and we do not expect any learner outside this EMIS. So, we appeal to headteachers to really work tirelessly to ensure that we have all our learners, teaching and non-teaching on the EMIS,” Lamaro said.

She continued to explain that the system will be in position to identify those schools which do not meet the basic staffing requirements in relation to teacher-student ratio.

According to Lamaro, the ministry is available to help the schools and will be in touch with them.
