Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has begun paving and installing solar lights at St Balikuddembe Market commonly known as Owino in order to provide a safe, clean, accessible and appropriate market environment. The works started yesterday 11th January 2023 in the city center.

KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka who was on an inspection tour at the market commended the efforts of the development partners such as UNDP who have been pivotal in funding the installation of the paving and solar lights.

“I want to thank the government who got us friends to support us pave our market. We all want smart markets where we can trade safely,” said Kisaka.

The chairperson of the Owino Market Produce Trading Section, Deo Walusimbi commended the KCCA on the installation of pavers and lights.

“This will improve the hygiene and sanitation of the market. We have been operating in a muddy place but now our market will be clean and smart,” Walusimbi said.

Jovia Naluga the Owino Market Master said since KCCA took charge of the market, sanity has been restored and vendors are happy that the directives of the president are being implemented.

“These lights will help us on security and extending the working hours of the market. We are appreciative of the development partners,” Naluga said.

According to Kisaka, KCCA will deploy more staff in the market to help ease the smooth flow and running of the market given its big size.

KCCA took over the administration of Owino following the presidential directive in November 2021 which placed all the 16 major markets around the city under the leadership of the city authority.
