Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, the National Unity Platform (NUP) Party President, has admitted to losing his members of parliament to the ruling NRM government led by President Yoweri Museveni.

According to Bobi Wine, most of his MPs work for Museveni. During a British Broadcasting Company (BBC) interview held on November 30, 2023, Bobi Wine entered the United Kingdom after 10 years, ever since he was banned due to the lyrics of his song kill the “Batty Man,” literally translated as gay man. At his first interview, he admitted to losing his NUP MPs to President Museveni.

“In my party, I have many MPs working for Museveni; that is why most of them voted for the homosexuality bill,” said Bobi Wine.

While at the interview with the BBC, when asked whether he supports homosexuality, which he had in his lyrics called upon people to kill the batty man, he alleges to have grown and changed, declaring his full support of homosexuality in not so many words.

He went ahead to say that the bill was formulated and passed targeting the opposition, his family, and himself for identifying with gay persons; however, he goes ahead to reveal that his NUP MPs work for Museveni and voted for the enactment of the bill.

This interview has left many Ugandans questioning whether Bobi Wine understood the questions and knew what he was answering, as his responses were contradictory in nature.

Dr. Patrick Wakida, a political analyst, said that Bobi Wine’s offering no definite answer as to whether he supports homosexuality or not is a clear indication that he wants to play it both ways.

“He is trying to please and appease his funders by banning the song and confusing them into believing he is against the bill, while at the same time confusing the populace that he is against homosexuality; however, it did not play out in his favor, as the questions asked needed a yes or no answer, so he only managed to confuse himself with his answers,” said Wakida.

Wakida noted that there is no connection between the Bill that was then signed into law and the families of those who opposed the Bill, including those that abstained from supporting the Bill. This can only mean one thing: that Bobi Wine stops at nothing, including peddling lies for his personal benefits.

Fox Odoi, Andrew Mwenda, and other human activists spoke against and opposed the bill before and after it was signed by the President into law and have never reported being threatened.

Justice Hunter, a staunch supporter of Bobi Wine, and some other people on Twitter have accused Bobi Wine of scapegoating, especially Hunter, who said Bobi Wine did a lot of deflecting and shifting blame; rather than give straight answers, he blamed Museveni.

“Rather than offer straight-forward answers like Museveni does when it comes to homosexuality and his stand is known, my principal, Bobi Wine, chose to shift blame to Museveni, targeting opposition with the bill. Where do you stand, Bobi Wine? Tell us with straight-forward answers,” said Hunter.

However, Bobi Wine’s own submission that he has grown and transformed by banning his own lyrics for a visa to the UK is a clear indication that he can do anything at the expense of Ugandans for his personal benefit.

According to Wakida, this kind of manipulation targets funders, the Ugandan community, supporters, and MPs he manipulates with the NUP. However, this strategy only works against him, to the point that he denied his own MPs for his personal benefits, admitting not being in control of his party and MPs
