On Saturday afternoon, the President, Yoweri k Museveni handed over cheques to different groups set to benefit from the Youth Livelihood Programme and the Women Entrepreneurship Programme supervised by the gender ministry.

A total of 915 youth groups from 26 districts received cheques amounting to Shs9 billion while 1,459 women groups from 43 districts also got Shs9 billion.

The purpose of these schemes is to give a headstart to these groups so that they move into value-addition while creating jobs for their members. For example, I was impressed by the Rulembo Youth group from Kisoro district that tans leather and makes shoes.

Whereas the government is doing its duty of providing infrastructure, services and ensuring peace prevails, individuals must take advantage of this conducive environment to fight poverty at the household level.
