CHOGM; LEADERS RE-AFFIRMED COMMITMENT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE AMIDST BITING COVID-19 IMPACTS

The discussion about the increasing climate change across the world on Friday dominated the ongoing Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting-CHOGM in Rwandan capital Kigali.

During the meeting, the leaders committed to prioritized to promote use of renewable  energy to boost campaign against climate change amidst biting impact of COVID-19.

The theme of this year’s high level meeting is dubbed “Delivering a Common Future Connecting, Innovating, Transforming the states” and under these climate change, tropical diseases have taken lead in the discussions.

Due to the constraint that covid-19 left on Rwanda and other states, CHOGM seeks to deliver solutions to the current climate problems that were caused by the effects of pandemic which several states are still recovering from.

Faustin Vuningoma, the Coordinator of Rwanda Climate Change and Development Organizations Network recognized how climate change escalated during pandemic.

“Whereas Covid-19 has already claimed many lives across the world, impacts of climate change once not curtailed could cause up to 250,000 additional deaths between 2030 and 2050  from factors such as malnutrition, heat stress and malaria,” He said.

The discussion sought to catalyze the global political momentum for enhancing climate action, building resilience, reducing biodiversity loss, and arresting land degradation.

Accordingly, the focus has been put on climate resilient agriculture, soil and water conservation and management, sustainable green cover and biodiversity among others.
