There has been growing animosity coupled with bitter fights over power struggle at Rubaga Cathedral.

The strained relationship between Kampala Archdiocese Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga and Bishops like Silvanus Jjumba of Masaka, late Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa, Bishop Matthias, Ssekamanya, Bishop Ssemogerere and other priests of lower rank had become a topical issue that went unadressed.

One of the mentioned Bishops was tipped to be the immediate replacement to Archbishop Lwanga as he was headed for early retirement by the Pope or sent to serve at the Vatican or other provinces outside Uganda.

The bitter row went public in 2019 when the Archbishop told off Bishop Jjumba and Ssemogerere to stop forthwith from celebrating mass in his archdiocese without his permission.

The Archbishop ranted in the presence of Bishop Jjumba and Bishop Ssemogerere at Rubaga Cathedral.

After the altercation, Bishop Ssemogerere was offended and it became visible especially when he boycotted having subsequent luncheons at Rubaga prepared by the Archbishop.

Another cause for row was when a section of priests at Rubaga petitioned the Pope over the Archbishop’s recent appointment of eight senior members of the Catholic church as knights, one of them being married to three wives which breaks the canonical laws.

That not very outstanding, Archbishop Lwanga has been shuffling priests he suspects of having a hand in blocking his elevation to the honor of Cardinal.

Sources at Rubaga have intimated to us that at the time of his passing, Archbishop Lwanga wasn’t in good books with Cardinal Wamala.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
