A clandestine move by the Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) founding leader, Col. (RTD) Dr. Kizza Besigye, lobbying other leaders of the Democratic Party (DP) to oust their president general, also the Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Norbert Mao, has been revealed.

A source in DP headquarters has revealed to this publication how the former NRA Commander, Dr. Besigye, has endlessly been wooing the “anti-DP Mao” faction headed by MP Michael Lulume to snatch party leadership from Mao.

The source revealed that Besigye has held various secret meetings with the anti-Mao faction, promising to support them financially to take over DP leadership from Justice Minister Norbert Mao.

It is also revealed that Dr. Besigye’s annoyance grew when DP Mao signed a cooperation agreement with the NRM.

“The working cooperation agreement between the ruling NRM and the DP is an individual’s decision, not a party decision processed by the party,” said one of the syndicate members.

The Anti-Moa syndicate also revealed that, since then, the syndicate’s chairperson, Walter Lubega Mukaaku, has secretly met with the FDC’s Besigye on how to create divisions in DP and blame them on Mao.

“We wanted Mao to lose credibility and support in DP; however, Dr. Besigye thinks that is not enough; we have to break the coalition too, so that the government and Mao are discredited,” said Mukaaku.

Political analysts believe that Besigye’s attempt to frustrate DP Mao is intended to create space for the FDC to emerge as Uganda’s leading opposition party.

According to political observers, the FDC lost prominent members to other political parties, primarily the NRM, as a result of internal weakness caused by DR. Besigye’s selfishness combined with a lack of ideology.

“Since then, the FDC leadership has done whatever it takes to bring down other opposition parties by inciting fights in the DP and NUP parties,” the analysts revealed.
