Joint Security Agencies are investigating the violent attack on a Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) mini checkpoint that leads to Gaddafi Barracks main gate in Jinja by a group of armed assailants.

A group of armed assailants killed a UPDF officer who was manning the mini checkpoint at around 9:00pm yesterday 17th November and robbed two guns.

According to the Police Spokesman SCP Fred Enanga, the deceased was identified as Sgt. Eyamu Simon Peter aged 45 and the second gun belonged to his colleague who had gone to the nearby shop.

“The assailants took advantage of the location of the mini-check point, distanced about 1km away from the main checkpoint to Gaddafi main barracks, the green cover and the Ambercoat market access, which made the mini-check point a soft target. They attacked the guard, stabbed him to the right chest and also shot him thrice, killing him instantly. The assailants robbed two guns and fled from the scene,” he said.

Enanga said that the Joint Regional security task teams responded, cordoned off the area and searched with the use of K9. The cordon and search has led to the arrest of one suspect who was found hiding in a trench.

He further said that they have arrested the second UPDF guard for further interrogation and also deployed a full investigation team to identify and pursue the assailants.

The body of the deceased has been transferred to Jinja Regional Referral hospital for further postmortem.

Uganda Police force send their condolences to the family, friends, relatives and workmates of the late Sgt. Eyamu Simon Peter.
