The Ministry of Health, on Thursday, November 21, 2024, launched a €12 million ( approximately UGX 46.6 Billion) project to enhance health infrastructure in the Karamoja region.

The Karamoja Infrastructure Development Project II (KIDP II), funded by a €10 million soft loan from Italy and a €2 million contribution from the government of Uganda, aims to improve healthcare access for the area’s impoverished population, where 70% lack adequate health services.

During the latest phase of the project, Dr. Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, said contracts have been awarded for construction and equipping works, with completion expected within 18 months.

The initiative aims at building new hospitals, expanding existing facilities, and training medical staff.

Additionally, staff accommodations are being constructed in every district to support healthcare workers in the most remote areas.

Contractors have been warned to adhere strictly to timelines and quality standards, with penalties for substandard work.
