Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah has tipped Opposition to shun anarchical methods of regime change and peacefully woo the population for them to realize the long awaited regime change.

“The ball is not the regime. A focus on the regime is a narrow and wrong focus.  The focus must be on the country and the people,” Oulanyah said.

“When we begin to attack the pillars and columns of this building, we have exceeded what we should be doing. So let’s remove the curtains, change the colors of the curtains, change the podium. Let us not tamper with the foundations and structural arrangement of this building,” he added.

Oulanyah made these remarks while officiating at the launch of the “Opposition Legislative Agenda” which was held at Parliament on Friday August 27, 2021.

The speaker, who prior to July 2006 was a Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) member before crossing to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) advised the minority Opposition against using violence.

“Regime change is different from country destruction. These two are very different. The constitution gives us avenues of regime change, every five years we try and fail. And the only reason why you are in the opposition is because at the time of elections, you didn’t have the numbers”.

He advised them to spend the next five years slowly and strategically building those numbers that they never had in the last elections through their power of persuasion but not chaos.
