Lewis Rubongoya, the Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has hidden at the party offices in Makerere-Kavule, failing to make it for the one million march intended to welcome back party president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, from abroad.

Rubongoya actively called out to NUP supporters on his Twitter handle to go to Entebbe to participate in the march.

“Mwaana ba taano, gamba taano ne taano… nga taano tugende tukime taano mulo ba taano,” tweeted Rubongoya.

According to sources, Rubongoya, rather than leading the march, stayed behind at the offices, shunning the one million march.

“It is shocking that the SG, who could have led the walk, hid at the office and instead chose to make a lot of noise on social media; it looks like he was afraid of the outcome and decided to play it safe while pushing others to the front lines,” said the source.

According to sources close to the NUP SG, he informed close friends that he would not be participating in the march and would be leaving it to the ‘bantu ba wansi’ (low-income citizens) to face harassment from security personnel.

“Rubongoya said that he will not attend the march because he believes that’s work for the bantu ba wansi, and he will not risk police scuffles,” the source stated.

NUP Party leadership and supporters had organised a welcome-back procession for Bobi Wine upon his return from Canada and South Africa; however, according to some supporters, they were not given the chance to do so as their leader was quickly whisked to his residence at Magere.
