The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety of the Uganda Police Force has registered a total of 72 road people who died in fatal accidents within one week countrywide.

SP Michael Kananura, the Spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, while addressing the media at the Police headquarters in Naguru, about the causes of the accidents on May 6, 2024, stated that among the dead were 24 motorcyclists, 24 pedestrians, 11 passengers in motor vehicles, 6 passengers on motorcycles, 4 pedal-cyclists, 1 driver and 2 other passengers.

“When we talk of two others in the road crashes, we mean like people who do skating and then they get hold of other vehicles which are moving, then they are knocked dead,” Kananura said.

He further stated that people who sell things alongside the roads and then the vehicle falls and kill such people and also those who stay in houses that are close to the roads are major causes of deaths.

Kananura also highlighted that the major causes of these crashes are careless overtaking, speeding, following two cars, and bad weather.

According to the 2022 Annual Crime Report, the country registered 20,394 cases of road accidents in 2022.

To curb the accidents, the police said they had resorted to enforcement of traffic laws and regulations through targeted operations, targeting motorcycle taxis and other risk factors such as speeding, and drunk driving.
