Major General Jack Bakasumba, the Chief Joint Staff of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has applauded retiring Generals for their unwavering commitment and selfless service, which have significantly contributed to the enduring peace in Uganda.

Speaking at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya on July 31, 2024, during the documentation exercise for five retiring Generals, Maj Gen Bakasumba highlighted their vital role in mentoring subordinate officers who will take over their responsibilities.

Maj Gen Bakasumba encouraged the retiring Generals to approach the new chapter of life with positivity.

He emphasized the importance of upholding patriotic values and advised against engaging in negative political activities that could hinder the country’s progress.

“Your legacy is one of service and dedication; carry that forward in your civilian life,” Maj Gen Bakasumba said.

Additionally, he urged the Generals to manage their gratuity funds wisely, recommending consultations with financial experts before making any investment decisions. He also called for continued membership in Wazalendo Sacco.

“Its favorable lending rates and secure savings options make it a preferable alternative to commercial banks,” the General advised.

Brigadier General James Kinalwa, the Joint Staff—Human Resource Management, echoed Gen Bakasumba’s sentiments, advising the Generals to engage actively in community initiatives to facilitate a smooth transition to civilian life.

He underscored the importance of respecting civil authorities to ensure a harmonious shift from military to civilian norms.

Brigadier General Charles Kisembo, the Director of the National Leadership Institute-Kyankwazi, expressed gratitude to the Commander-in-Chief, Gen Yoweri Museveni, for his efforts in professionalizing the UPDF and ensuring a seamless retirement process.

He pledged to contribute to socio-economic transformation efforts, aligning with Uganda’s Vision 2040 goals for economic growth and stability.

The retiring Generals expressed pride in leaving behind a stable and peaceful nation, free from major security threats, as a testament to their successful guerrilla warfare efforts.

They conveyed confidence that their extensive experience and leadership skills will greatly benefit their communities, particularly in driving progress in key sectors such as agriculture.

The event was attended by Generals and senior officers, all of whom acknowledged the significant contributions made by their retiring colleagues to the nation’s security and development.
