Over 70 Dead in Just One Week, Alarming Surge in Road Accidents, Says Traffic Police

The Traffic Police has reported that in just one week, a staggering number of 77 fatalities and 399 injuries were recorded due to road accidents across the country.

According to SP Michael Kananura, the Spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, of the 77 who died, 25 were motorcyclists, 22 were pedestrians, and 7 were passengers.

Kananura made these remarks while addressing the presser on March 4, 2024 on issues pertaining to what transpired in the traffic Directorate last week (From February 25 to March 3, 2024).

According to Kananura, pedestrians contibute to a significant proportion of road accident fatalities in Uganda, with over three quarters of all road accident deaths being pedestrians.

This week, Uganda police will conduct operations on drivers who have continuously led to road accidents especially those who drive on one-ways, those who overtake improperly, boda bodas who ride without helmets, reflective jackets and without driving permits among others.
