The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka, has celebrated the authority’s success in the financial year 2023/24 and outlined strategic goals for 2024/25.
In the KCCA presser on Thursday 18 July,2024, on their X platform (formerly Twitter), the authority highlighted its achievements including the successful implementation of the Kampala Traffic Control Center, Road Infrastructure Transformation, the Nutrition Action Plan, and Waste Management among others.
Kampala Traffic Control Center
One of the most significant milestones was the successful implementation of the Kampala Traffic Control Center, a government-funded project, which was set to signalize 27 junctions across the city. This whole project is already being implemented at key roundabouts such as Mulago, Kubiri, and Speke Road, with the goal of easing congestion, improving road safety, and enhancing the overall efficiency of the city’s transportation network.
Road Infrastructure
The Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP) is underway, refurbishing at least 100 km of roads in the city, including industrial area roads, the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th streets, Salama Road in Makindye division and Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road connecting old Kampala in Central Division to Bwaise in Kawempe division. This project will address traffic bottlenecks and significantly reduce the time motorists spend commuting.
Flood Mitigation
KCCA installed culverts on Ggaba Road and improved drainage on Wavamunno Road, with 80% of planned bridge structures and 90% of drainage improvement works completed. The authority continued to repair and construct over 10km of community drainage channels across the 5 Divisions of Kampala
Nutrition Action Plan
KCCA has launched a Nutrition Action Plan for 2023/24 to 2029/30, aiming to reduce malnutrition burdens and ensure the well-being of the city’s residents.
Market Development
The construction of a new parking lot at Busega Market and the commencement of construction works for Kisekka Market are steps forward in creating workspaces for city residents and addressing the challenge of street vending.
Waste Management
KCCA registered a solid waste collection performance of 77%, which exceede its 70% target. The authority has expanded its garbage truck fleet, adding 10 more trucks, and now boasts 40 trucks, 5 tractors, and 5 cesspool trucks. The trucks continue to collect garbage for free from public spaces and institutions like markets, schools and over 270 informal settlements that have been mapped across the city.
Agricultural Support
KCCA has provided agricultural extension and advisory services to at least 2,000 farmer households, trained 400 farmers, and established 5 demonstration sites in the city. Plans are underway to train more farmers in mushroom growing, poultry value addition, and urban farming, all aimed at improving livelihoods and increasing participation in the money economy.
KCCA has set strategic goals for 2024/25, including enhancing Kampala’s infrastructure through the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP), which aims to revolutionize the city’s infrastructure by 21kms, thereby improving connectivity within the city and the wider Kampala Metropolitan area.
KCCA’s achievements demonstrate its commitment to transforming Kampala into a smart city that prioritizes technology, infrastructure, and people’s well-being. These accomplishments align with the Government of Uganda’s broader agenda of enhancing sustainable cities and the Vision 2040 plan.
