The Judiciary has recorded significant achievements and initiatives in the quarterly performance report aimed at enhancing justice delivery in the country.
This was announced by James Eremye Mawanda, the judicial spokeswoman, while addressing a media briefing on Tuesday, August 20th, from the High Court headquarters in Kampala.
He cited the verdict delivered by the International Crimes Division in the high-profile Thomas Kwoyelo case as one of the notable achievements of the judiciary.
Kwoyelo was found guilty on 44 counts, acquitted on three, and had 31 charges dismissed.
“Additionally, the recent Settlement Week was deemed a success, with 237 out of 840 cases resolved, resulting in the recovery of over Shs 2 billion,” said Mawanda.
He says the judiciary has recorded a disposal rate of 26.29% for the fourth quarter, with Grade Two Magistrates Courts leading in efficiency and Chief Magistrates Courts processing the highest number of cases.
According to Mawanda, these figures indicate progress in clearing the case backlog.
The Judiciary emphasized the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in resolving disputes efficiently and reducing court workloads.
The committee led by the Deputy Chief Justice, Justice Richard Buteera, is currently working to seamlessly integrate ADR into the judicial process.
This initiative is particularly crucial for resolving family disputes, as the Judiciary underscored the need to prioritize ADR in such cases to preserve family harmony and reduce court congestion.
