Besigye’s Attempt to Dissolve Original FDC Exposes His Political Selfishness

The recent Katonga faction delegates conference resolved to form a new party and the dissolution of the old Forum for Democratic Change party.

Col. (Rtd) Dr. Kizza Besigye, the founder of the original FDC, massively supported the resolution and vowed to spearhead the move before they could register a new political party.

His move has attracted reactions from several Ugandans, with the majority questioning why Besigye and his cohorts would push for the dissolution of the old party that has made him what he is today, yet he can feel free to form a new party without dissolving the old one.

Officially, the FDC Najjanankumbi faction is in the hands of Patrick Oboi Amuriat (president) and Nandala Mafabi, the secretary general; therefore, the decision by the Katonga group to dissolve it is farfetched and legally impossible.

Besigye’s selfish and combative nature will never make him settle for seeing those who disagree with him have peace.

He wants to see fights wherever he goes, which is one of the reasons other political parties like the NUP could not accommodate him to form the United Forces of Change.

The current fights and disintegration of the FDC are solely caused by Besigye himself, and even the new party to be formed may be full of fights as long as he remains at the helm.

His intention to dissolve the old party is to disorganize those who do not agree with him on principle, and he wants the pro-Najjanakumbi legislators to lose their seats if the party is dissolved so that by-elections can be held in their respective constituencies before their terms end.

Besigye’s gesture shows the individualism of our opposition leaders; it is either them or nobody else.

Throughout his tenure at the FDC headquarters, he fought with many leaders and branded them moles as long as they disagreed with his modus operandi.

He has also disagreed with other opposition leaders in other political parties over finances and ideologies.

Soon, the pro-change Ugandans will understand how Besigye has been responsible for the opposition disunity in Uganda because of his selfishness.

This has always given the NRM and President Museveni a sure win, and the same story will be repeated in 2026.

Besigye and the group are strategically rooting to secure more parliamentary seats in 2026 as a lobbying capacity for massive multiparty funds from the government and attract international funding to keep politically relevant.
