A total of 42 housing units have been constructed for the landslide victims in Bunambutye resettlement camp in Bulambuli District by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.

The construction work, which is in its final stages, has been done by the UPDF Engineering Brigade of the Third Division. As of Friday, December 9th 2022, the construction work is at the roofing level.

According to Brig. Gen. Cyrus Besigye Bekunda, the Commander of the UPDF Engineering Brigade, each housing unit is built with a separate kitchen that is attached to the main house, and the ventilated improved pit latrine has been constructed.

“We have constructed 42 housing units for the victims who were displaced by landslides, with each housing unit having a kitchen and pit latrine. The construction work is now at the roofing level,” he said.

Brig. Gen. Bekunda noted that each housing unit is seated on an acre of land measuring 40 by 100 meters.

The construction of houses, which is being undertaken by the UPDF Engineering Brigade and Police’s construction unit, started on December 15, 2018, after people affected by landslides in Bududa, Manafwa, Namisindwa, Bulambuli, and Sironko districts were resettled.

Landslides that hit the five districts in 2012, 2017, 2018, and 2019 have since claimed the lives of about 504 people, displaced thousands of people, and destroyed several properties.

Over 4,000 people have so far been resettled in the camp in three phases: 2019, 2020, and 2022. A total of 900 houses are to be constructed for the resettled landslide victims.
