Police in Gulu District arrested a fellow officer for defiling and impregnating a 14- year-old primary school girl.

Police constable attached to Palaro Police Post in Palaro Sub-county, Gulu Town, was arrested on Saturday following a tip off from residents that the Officer had committed the offence.

Following the officers’ criminal act, the girl dropped out of school in Lamwo District in May last year.

This is where concerned residents of Palaro sub county, where she was residing after dropping out of school, after hearing her story decided to hand over the minor to Palaro Police post.

While at the Police post, it is alleged that the Officer in Charge Sgt Jasper Opene instead handed over the victim to her victimizer who took rounds of sexual intercourse on her and making her pregnant. After realising the girl was pregnant, the Police officer with the help of a nurse took her to a medical facility in Gulu Town where an abortion was conducted.

Aswa River Region police spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema, confirmed the arrest and detention of the suspect at Gulu Central Police Station pending investigation.

Okema said the trio (the Suspect, Officer in Charge at Palaro police post and the nurse) will be investigated for the role they played in abusing the girl.

Attempts to get a comment from the child protection units based in Gulu were futile however, the District Probation Officer Samuel Ouma condemned the act and said he will follow up the case till it is resolved.

According to Police statistics as per 2017 14,985 defilement cases were reported and 27.3 percent were from Nothern Uganda. According to USAID, defilement is one of the causes for School dropout and child poverty in the areas of Nothern Uganda that needs to be dealt with.
