The government is set to receive over two trillion shillings (587 million US dollars) from the Global Fund to help combat TB, HIV, and malaria, among others.

Tonnie Stieve Luyimbazi, the Executive Secretary and the Global Fund Country Coordinator in Uganda, said as the country prepares to request funding, a national dialogue is being planned to discuss priority areas. The activities to be implemented between 2024 and 2026

Tonnie Luyimbazi explained how the country has become eligible to access the fund.

“One of the conditions for the country to secure the global fund is that it must contribute to the global fund basket, and Uganda contributed $3 million to the global fund last year, so we now qualify for the fund,” he said.

He emphasized that the national dialogue is paramount before the implementation process to allow important decisions to be made in consideration of the country’s priorities.

“We may have divergent priorities, but before we get into the actual application process, we must sit together as a country and agree on what is good and impactful for the country’s interim priorities,” he said.

He stated that the national dialogue will take place from January 18th to January 19th, 2023.
