The government of Uganda is to go ahead with earlier plans to distribute relief food items in the areas of Kampala and Wakiso as earlier communicated by the Prime Minister of Uganda, Ruhakana Rugunda and on advice by the President, Yoweri Museveni in his last national address.

The Prime Minister also said that, “Government has to govern. This is an emergency. Distribution of food must start tomorrow. Parliament’s role is advisory, we have decided to reject the advice of Parliament”.

The announcement was made today (Friday) by government spokesman Ofwono Opondo in a tweet on his account.

This follows news that Parliament had stopped the exercise after plenary session yesterday were they accused the government of sidelining them in the process and also after arguing that other parts of the country too needed the food items.

However this decision was made by government after careful consideration and following data from Uganda Bureau of Standards who conducted the last census in the country.

It is prudent that the government remains resilient in the face of the pandemic and avoid politicking and selfish Interests of Parliament. The same parliamentarians were requesting government to avail them funds so as to be able to offer relief items at personal level in their constituency.
