Supreme Court Justice Aweri Opio passes on at 69 years

Judiciary and the entire legal fraternity are filled with grief after the passing on of Hon. Justice Rubby Aweri Opio the Supreme Court Justice and the Chief Inspector of Courts at the age of 69.

The sUdden death of Justice Opio was confirmed today Wednesday 7th November 2022, by the Chief Justice Hon. Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo in an official Judiciary statement.

“The Hon. Chief Justice, Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny Dollo, with great grief announces the death of Supreme Court Justice and Chief Inspector of Courts, Hon. Mr. Justice Ruby Opio Aweri that occurred today 7th December, 2022 at Mulago National Referral Hospital,” the Statement reads.

According to the deceased’s family, Justice Opio died of a stroke which affected his brain and has been admitted in critical condition for a month under Intensive Care Unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

Opoi was born in 1953 in Dokolo district Northern Uganda. He started his career in the judiciary in 1982 as a legal assistant in Soroti District.

In 1983, he was elevated to the position of a Magistrate Grade I and rose through the ranks to a Justice of the Supreme Court, a position he held until the time of his death.

As a career Judicial Officer, Justice Opio Aweri was appointed Judge of the High Court in 1998 and later elevated to a Justice of the Court of Appeal in 2015. At the time of his demise, he was the Chief Inspector of the Courts of Judicature.
