Rtd. Col. Charles Okello Engola, the State Minister for Labour, has been shot dead by his bodyguard from his home in Kyanja, Kampala.

Recollections from eyewitnesses indicate that the incident occurred at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, the bodyguard, whose name has not yet been identified, was a UPDF soldier who later shot himself dead.

It’s said the bodyguard, after shooting the minister dead, went around firing bullets in the air until he reached a saloon, where he commanded the people in the saloon to move out before killing himself.

Other bodyguards are said to be on the run, and their whereabouts aren’t yet known.

Latif Ssebagala, the former Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, said that the suspect also shot another fellow bodyguard who has been rushed to the hospital in a critical condition while the rest of the bodyguards are on the run.

The residents are shocked and have eulogized the dead minister as a good person.

Police detectives from the homicide unit have cordoned off the scene of the crime, and the official statement of the police is yet to be released.
