While presenting the Audit Report to Parliament today, January 19 2023, John Muwanga, Uganda’s Auditor General pledged to constantly collaborate with the legislature to provide effective results.
“The office commits to continue working with parliament to ensure that we successfully implement our mandate,” Muwanga said.
The Auditor General expressed his gratitude to Parliament for its assistance in enabling the Office of the Auditor General to conduct its audits with little difficulty. He continued by saying that they pledge to support Parliament’s discussion of the reports.
According to Muwanga, the scope of the audit has reached over 17,000, which is beyond the current capacity the office can handle.
“The increased capacity requires additional staffing and associated findings,” he stated.
Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anitah Among, who received the audit, promised to cooperate with the Auditor General to achieve superior outcomes.
“This report has arrived on time, and we will lay it on the table and deliver it to the various Committees to address the findings of the Auditor General’s Report this afternoon,” the Speaker said.
According to Muwanga, the Office of the Auditor General conducted more than 1930 financial value for money audits and other types of audits in the Audit Year 2021–2022, all of which were intended to increase the accountability of public finances.
Within six months of its submission, Parliament must discuss, evaluate, and act on the Report in accordance with Article 163 Subsection 5 of the Ugandan Constitution.
The Office of the Auditor General is the Supreme Audit Institution in Uganda. The Constitution mandates the Auditor General to audit and report on all public accounts of Uganda and to further conduct financial and Value for Money audits in respect of any project involving public funds.
