Revelations from Police that pin Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro in the involvement of the fire outbreak at Iganga High School that left students and school property in ruins have emerged.
In an investigation by Police detectives, Musa Kabanda revealed that a group of three people who remain anonymous due to the ongoing Police investigations approached him and introduced themselves as being sent by Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the Deputy Spokesperson NUP.
Kabanda, a resident of Ibulanku in Iganga District was arrested on Monday 20th June 2022 at around 10:45 am and is currently detained at Iganga Police Station.
Kabanda revealed that to convince him to do the job, he was handed a telephone on which he took direct orders from Mufumbiro. He said that in the phone conversation, Mufumbiro agreed to a pay a sum of Ugx 2.2 million for a complete mission.
The agents had with them a sum of Ugx 1 million as deposit which was handed over to Kabanda and his counterpart Zikusooka, while the balance was to be given after completing the mission.
He also revealed that other targeted schools next on the list are St. Joseph’s Nsambya S.S, St. Mark’s Collage Namagoma, St. Charles Lwanga Lwanjiri-Kasanda and MM Collage Wairaka Modern Secondary School.
On further interrogation, Kabanda said that another strategy set by Mufumbiro in attacking schools is to use students within the targeted schools to carry out the arson. According to information from Western Uganda News outlets, St. Andrews Rubindi Senior Secondary School located in Rubindi Kashari North Constituency in Mbarara District is the latest to be burnt whose prime suspect is a student.
According to police reports, Zikusooka is on the run and still at large. The Busoga East Police Spokesperson Diana Nandawula said that they are still hunting him down for arrest.
“We are doing all it takes to arrest Zikusooka and make sure that he is brought to book and charged with arson if found guilty,” she said.
According to sources from some students at Iganga High School who preferred anonymity, revealed that they saw two men wearing headgears on Sunday night at around 9:00 pm accessing the school premises from the direction of a banana plantation jumping over the perimeter wall on the side of the boys’ dormitory.
The students said that the fire that caught the senior three and four boys’ dormitories sparked off after students had finished their supper and were in for evening preps.
A team from the Police fire and rescue services department arrived on time and put out the fire. The school had also installed CCTV cameras in some areas that helped Police to establish the cause of fire through a footage that is being used for further investigations.
