Inside the West’s Obsession with Celebrity Politicians.

Another day and another west news publication naming BoBi Wine among a group of individuals to be reckoned with globally. This is despite the fact that the musician is yet to achieve another tangible here in Uganda beyond sloganeering.

Across Africa, many such politicians have been praised and elevated by the west only for them to plunge their countries in chaos and turmoil. A case study is that of George Weah in Liberia who was elevated to the level of savior for the west African country. He has since taking power plunged the country’s economy to depths like never before seen.

Many more such cases can be seen across the continent like with Madagascar where a former disco jokey was supported by the west to overthrow the government due to alleged popular support from people.

Many other supporters of such characters often argue that a potential leader of country need not have competency in key issues like nation building and knowledge of economic nuance.

This is totally bull shit, just like we saw bobi wine stutter when asked on international television what Fiscal policy is.

International publications can elevate the likes of bobi wine to whichever heights they wish, but until they, themselves prove to the people that they can deliver, they may as well come to us to busk in the glory without ever having an impact on the people they aim to lead.
