The Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, and the Member of Parliament representing Nakawa West constituency want the Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, to resign.
While addressing the opposition MPs at parliament on Thursday, August 22, 2024, Ssenyonyi (NUP) blamed Lukwago for failing to offer effective leadership to guide the development of Kampala Capital City.
According to Ssenyonyi, Lord Mayor Lukwago is solely responsible for the severe mismanagement of the Kiteezi dumping site that has led to tragic consequences, including the loss of lives and significant property damage.
This is the first time Ssenyonyi is exposing Lukwago’s leadership rot, which he said has completely failed Kampala.
He specifically pinned Lukwago for not carefully utilising his power to manage the Kiteezi dumping site, despite numerous reports from KCCA technical officials warning about the possible calamity.
“Lukwago, as the city mayor, failed Kiteezi residents because the dumping site had long been a point of contention after residents and medical teams expressed their concerns over health and environmental risks. Where was he? Can he honestly say he was not aware of the challenges at Kiteezi?” Ssenyonyi uttered.
Recently, about 30 people died after the collapse of waste pies in Kiteezi, and several properties were destroyed.
