The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Najjanakumbi faction president, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, has criticized the FDC Katonga faction led by Kampala City Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago and party founder president Col (Rtd) Kizza Besigye over their decision to form a new separate party, other than trying to destroy the whole party.

According to Amuriat, the former party members should have formed the new party earlier rather than destabilizing the party as they did.

Amuriat was responding to news of Katonga-based FDC groups forming their new party.

This comes after the FDC leaders based at Katonga Road started touring the country on Monday, March 11, 2024, to gather support from their loyal members, which started in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, to form a new party.

According to Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the interim Katonga faction spokesperson who doubles as the Kira Municipality member of parliament, this will help their members get party cards ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Amuriat stressed that this will save FDC from the confusion brought about by the Katonga breakaway faction, highlighting that the move will strengthen FDC Najjanakumbi.

He added that it’s also possible that a more streamlined FDC under his leadership could emerge stronger. Only time will tell how this situation unfolds.

Amuriat also reminded the breakaways that they were not the first to do it. He cited Major General Mugisha Muntu’s group, which quit the FDC and founded the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party, which he states is too weak to make a significant contribution to the opposition.
