Over 80 UPDF Generals, Officers, Politicians Graduate in Makerere’s 74th Graduation Ceremony

Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has received special recognition at the 74th Makerere Graduation Ceremony, with 82 generals and officers graduating today, Friday, February 2, 2024.

The UPDF personnel have graduated from the Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Social Sciences. These have graduated in different disciplines, including Masters of Security Strategy, Master of Defence and Security Studies, Ordinary Diploma in Strategy and Warfare, and Bachelor of Defence Studies.

According to the UPDF, the graduates include ten generals: Brig. Byekwaso Flavia, the former UPDF spokesperson; Brig.Keita Wycliff Ruterana; Brig. Kusasira Stephen, Brig. Mugabe Robert, Brig. Mugume Ephraim, Brig. Mugumya Daniel, Brig. Nakalema Edith, Brig. Ndyabagye Deus, Brig. Ogume Laki Christopher, and Brig.Otongo John Patrick.

The UPDF personnel graduated from the National Defence College in Uganda, the Senior Command and Staff College in Kimaka, and the Uganda Military Academy in Kabamba, which were affiliated with Makerere University in 2022.

Among the officers, Col. Asiimwe Deo Akiiki, the deputy UPDF spokesperson, graduated with a Master’s Degree in Defence and Security Studies.

According to the Chief Political Commissar, Maj. Gen. Henry Masiko, at the luncheon of the UPDF officers on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Wilson Mbadi, these graduations demonstrate the ongoing professional development and education within the Force.

This year’s 5th Secession of the Makerere graduation ceremony has also seen a total of 27 senior police officers with Master’s degrees in Peace and Conflict Studies from Makerere University.

Politician Hon.Peace Mutuuzo, the state minister of gender and culture, who is also a woman MP for Bunyangabu District, graduated with a PHD in defence.

The first cohort of students, consisting of first-star generals (Brigadier), senior military commanders (Colonel), and high-ranking government personnel, were admitted in January 2022.

Graduates of the National Defence College-Uganda receive a National Defence College badge and a master’s degree awarded by Makerere University.
