The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have announced the mobilisation and recruitment of Local Defence Personnel (LDPs) in the districts of Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, Bunyangabo, Kyenjojo, and Kasese.

According to a statement made by the UPDF on December 26, 2023, the recruitment follows a directive by the President of Uganda to reactivate Local Defence Structures in the areas surrounding Kibale National Park and Greater Rwenzori Sub-region in order to protect communities against attacks by the ADF.

“The recruitment will be conducted in two phases. Phase 1 will run from December 27, 2023, to January 10, 2024, and it will cover the districts of Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, and Bunyangabo,” the UPDF stated.

“Phase 2 will cover the districts of Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, and Kasese. Phase 2 will begin immediately after Phase 1 and will be conducted as in Phase 1,” UPDF added.

According to the statement, the UPDF would undertake the procedure in sixty (60) parishes or wards using the quota system, with each parish or ward contributing 12 recruits for a total of 720 individuals in phase 1.

UPDF stated that to qualify for recruitment, one has to be a citizen of Uganda who is ready to volunteer, physically and medically fit, and an adult aged 18–45 years.

“To be able to qualify, one has to have a minimum education of Primary Seven (P.7), duly signed letters of recommendation from the LC1 Chairperson, Defence Secretary, and DISO/GISO, be a resident of the area without a criminal record, be disciplined, and have no other employment or engagement,” UPDF stated.

The Resident District Commissioner, Deputy Resident District Commissioners, UPDF personnel, Uganda Police Force, Internal Security Organisation, LC1 Chairpersons, and Secretaries for Defence will conduct the mobilisation and recruitment process.
