The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, has announced that the government is actively implementing various socio-economic transformation programmes aimed at benefiting older persons. This announcement was made during the commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons, which took place at Humura Primary School in Kyegegwa District on October 1, 2023.

Nabbanja highlighted that these programs would encompass the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) and the Special Enterprise Grant for Older Persons (SEGOP). These initiatives are intended to support and uplift the livelihoods of older individuals, enabling them to actively participate and contribute to the country’s development.

Expressing gratitude, Nabbanja acknowledged the invaluable contributions made by older persons to the nation’s progress. By recognizing their dedicated efforts, the government aims to establish an inclusive and supportive environment for older individuals throughout Uganda.

The International Day of Older People is observed annually on October 1. This day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 45/106 on December 14, 1990, and first celebrated worldwide on October 1, 1991. This global observance serves to promote awareness of the contributions, challenges, and rights of older persons in society.
