The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, has urged the Government to reduce taxes on imported goods, especially those used in hospitals.

Archbishop Kaziimba made the statement on July 26, 2023, during a speech at the handover of medical equipment donated by the Banabas Fund from the United Kingdom to the Church of Uganda.

Among the items donated to the church were medical uniforms, disposable aprons, hospital gloves, scrubs, and other medical equipment used in surgery rooms, which were then distributed to Church of Uganda-based hospitals around the country.

While handing over the items to some of the heads of hospitals, Archbishop Kaziimba thanked the government for their assistance in ensuring that the equipment was delivered.

However, he asked the government to lower taxes on imported items, particularly those used in hospitals.

“We want to appreciate the Government of Uganda for standing with us like they did during COVID-19 when we received a number of things that were exempted from taxes because it’s very important. Sometimes we have gifts coming in from our friends, but the tax hinders us from receiving these items,” Kaziimba stated.

He also appreciated Banabas Fund UK for the gifts, which will help boost service delivery in these hospitals.
