Senior Commissioner (SP) of the Prisons Service Commission, SP Frank Mayanja Baine, the Spokesperson for Uganda Prisons, has warned the public that some fraudsters and conmen are calling prisoners’ relatives and fraudulently notifying them of prisoners’ deaths.
He stated this in a press release issued on Tuesday, July 24, 2023.

“It has come to the attention of Uganda Prisons Service authorities that some fraudsters or conmen are calling prisoners’ relatives and falsely informing them of the deaths of prisoners,” revealed SP Baine.

He went on to say that the fraudsters pretend to be phoning from the Uganda Prisons Service or on behalf of the Service and seek money via mobile money to transport the deceased bodies to them, which he condemned as untrue.

He emphasised that the Uganda Prisons Service firmly opposes these fraudulent crimes and urges the public to be vigilant.

He also stated that when a prisoner dies in their custody, the body is transported to the Mortuary of a referral hospital, and communication is made with the deceased’s relatives through the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), and Chief Magistrate of the district of origin.

He went on to say that no money is being exchanged or requested in this case.
