President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has told the African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, that the insecurity in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Sudan, where fresh fighting broke out recently, is a result of leaders engaging in sectarian politics and embracing western imperialism.
Mr. Moussa had on Monday called on the President at State House Entebbe to brief him about the recent summit he convened in Luanda, Angola, about the conflict in the Eastern DRC. The President said the problems in DR Congo started in the 1960s and were perpetuated by the imperialists killing Patrice Lumumba for selfish gain.
“From that time, Congo has never stabilised; they have never had a national political party; they have never had a national army,” the President said.
President Museveni said that the M23 rebels are a political issue that is amenable to discussion because they are not making significant demands to end the conflict.
“Some of their demands are simply to go back to their homes and to be integrated into the army, so we are encouraging H.E. Tshisekedi to agree with them (the M23 rebels),” the President emphasised.
On the Sudan question, the president said it is mostly about politics of identity and that he has advised them on three things; to stop fighting, Plan for elections, and offer amnesty to those willing to work for peace. Mr. Moussa expressed gratitude to President Museveni for all the advice and guidance during his tenure as chairperson of the commission for the last six years.
