Police Station at Gogonya Nsambya, has today 3rd July 2023, netted two notorious conmen who were caught in action trying to hood wink one of the managers at a top company in Nsambya.

According to a source from the company who preferred anonymity, the duo of thieves so far identified as Kazungu Thomas alias Allan and Menya Yusuf proposed an illicit transaction in which they offered to trade in Tanzanite mineral with one of their top official.

The source said that their manager received a suspicious call from a person who identified himself as Captain Mugisha attached to Operation Shuja and offered to sell tanzanite mineral at a whooping sum of 250,000 USD.

“A man who identified himself as a UPDF captain called one of our managers and offered a deal to sell tanzanite to him claiming that he had got it from a traditional chief in Congo,” a source said.

However, according to the source from the targeted company revealed that following multiple calls and arrangements to meet the manager, when the pair of the conmen arrived and the manager asked for the clearance of the minerals, they claimed that the tanzanite and it’s clearance were in a safe hotel room. This prompted great suspicion from the manager who alerted the Police at Gogonya in Nsambya, who then swung in action and put the suspects to handcuffs.

The Police at Gogonya has not been reachable for a comment at the time of this publication however, a source from the trader’s company said that the duo thieves should be prosecuted as a way to bring an end to the rising fraudsters who are targeting businessmen in Kampala.

Background as narrated by the source

On Friday 30th June 2023, a manager at one top traders’ company in Nsambya received a call from a man who identified oneself as Capt. Mugisha operating in Congo who claimed to have Tanzanite 250,000 USD and offered to do business with him.

The Source narrates that the self-proclaimed captain offered to give him a quick deal and also give him a contact of a white-man buyer (Muzungu) who was on his way from Nairobi to pick the precious gem.

This prompted the conscious part of the manager wondering why the “Captain” did not want to sell directly to the Muzungu buyer but offered to be a middle man. The source claims that following multiple phone calls including one from the purported Muzungu, he accepted the two men to proceed, except that he informed the police about the proceedings which led to their arrest today 3rd July 2023.

According to sources from the Police Criminal Investigation Department, cases involving con men are usually tricky to solve due to mastery of suspects in hiding evidence, however declined to comment on this particular case saying it had not reached their offices. However, the source from CID said that the matter will be followed.
