Democratic Party (DP) has requested the Director of Public prosecutions (DPP) to close the files of eight youth activists who were arrested and remanded for demonstrating about the diversion of Karamoja iron sheets.
Moses Bukenya, Nelson Ndyasiima, Sanyu Najjuma, Sharif Kawooya, Augustine Batanda, Gilbert Nayebare, Shafia Ssegawa, and Teddy Ssemakula are on trial at Buganda road court over illegally holding demonstration. Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) President Ismail Kiirya on Tuesday noted that since DPP managed to set free 17 suspects and charged 23, then files of the youths who were protesting should be closed.
“We are saying that because if that corruption scandal was involving the opposition figures, this couldn’t have been the treat. This now normalises the corruption in Uganda and we can now confirm that Uganda has no will to fight corruption”, Kiirya said.
The Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Francis Abodo has revealed that they discovered that 23 files were directly involved in the diversion of iron sheets and that out of the 23, they screened the suspects and found that they did not have sufficient evidence to proceed with 17 case files of suspects.
