National Unity Platform (NUP) leaders are in a big fight and scramble for the position of Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP). Various individuals have been pointed out to be eyeing the office of LOP, which indicates that the NUP leaders are ready to take up the mantel.

This has led to the amendment of the party constitution and the revision of term limits, which require any leader within NUP to serve for a period of two terms.

According to sources within NUP, Betty Nambooze is at the top of the list of those who are eyeing the position. The sources said that she has for long been eyeing the LOP position and wanting to take it up, which has caused misunderstandings and infighting within the party.

A source revealed that Nambooze has been controversial in opposition political parties and in Parliament and therefore thinks that she’s fit for the position.

According to the source, Nambooze stated at one point in 2021 that she remains the most competent NUP leader in terms of political seniority and administrative exposure, and should the position open up, she would be willing to take it.

Nambooze said that, having been a Member of Parliament since 2011 with ten years of legislative experience, Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, should consider her the next Leader of Opposition in Parliament.

However, a section of NUP leaders have accused the Mukono Municipality MP of being two-faced and have therefore warned her to keep away from that position or else face their wrath.

According to sources, many of those who are fighting for this position are said to have already bribed party leader Bobi Wine.

“Nambooze is yet to give in her bribe in order to be considered for the position but the rest have already paid,” a source said.

Other NUP leaders said to be vying for the position include Francis Zaake, Medard Ssegona, and Flavia Kalule, among others.
