Lira High Court Awards 68Bn to Locals for Land Used for IDP Camps

The high court in Lira city has awarded Ugx 68billion to locals whose land was used to set up Internally Displaced Person Camps during the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) war insurgency under Lango Camp host association.

This came after Hon. Justice Alex Mackey Ajiji delivered a judgment yesterday 22nd February, at Lira Court for Application No. 27 of 2016, awarding 68 billion shillings after ruling in favor of the 5505 members of Lango Camp Host Association.

The Lango Camp Host Association was represented by Makmot Kibwanga, Company Advocates and twelve members were physically present in court to represent the 5505 members during the ruling on Tuesday February 21st 2023.

We started the struggle way back in 2009 when I was still a university student now we are happy that each member of cam host association will receive over 12.5million shillings,”  Lango camp host association Executive  Director Denis Oyite said.

The coordinator of the Lango camp host association Mr. Joe Etii stated that he was satisfied with the court ruling. He added that they appreciate Justice Alex Mackey for taking a direction which benefits the locals.

According to UNHCR by 2005 there were 242 camps hosting 1,842,500 IDPs who had been forced from their homes by the war between the LRA and Ugandan Government forces.

As of the end of June 2007, 539,550 IDPs had returned to their homes and some 916,000 IDPs remain in the camps. Another 381,000 moved to the new sites closer to their homes.
