The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) conducted combined operations in the Mwalika Valley to rescue six abductees, kill one rebel, and retrieve weapons.

According to Maj. Bilal Katamba, the spokesperson for Operation Shujaa, the joint operation was able to rescue six abductees, three women, and three children and was able to put out of action one ADF rebel, and collect weapons.

“The joint forces recovered 204 rounds of the PMK machine gun, 41 rounds of the submachine gun, and three empty magazines,” Maj. Katamba said.

He stated that the army led by Maj. Chombe is currently combing the Valley of Mwalika in North Kivu Province, Eastern DR Congo, for ADF fighters.

Katamba went on to say that the UPDF has been on the hunt for the ADF insurgents since December 2021, when artillery and air raids were begun against the group’s bases in the dense eastern DRC regions.

The operation followed terror attacks in Kampala that left over 10 dead and scores injured during twin blasts targeting the Central Police Station and Parliamentary Avenue.

Several ADF camps have also been destroyed during this period, and several other areas have been liberated from the group’s control in the DRC.
