The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has carried out a successful intelligence-led operation in the areas around Lake Edward, where they intercepted a group of ADF fighters responsible for the recent killing of two tourists and their Ugandan driver in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The Deputy Defence Spokesperson, Col. Deo Akiiki, told journalists that they killed an unspecified number of suspected ADF terrorists on Lake Edward off Kayaja landing site in Kasese district on the night of October 31st. Col. Akiiki said that the terrorists are believed to be those who have been tracked since the attack that left two foreign tourists and their Ugandan driver in Queen Elizabeth National Park dead.

“Some ADF terrorists whom we have been tracking down since the attack on our tourists were finally found, and a number of them were killed last night on the Lake Edward of Kayanja Landing site in Kasese district. A very well-led intelligence operation saw this operation successful. A number of them perished under the combined fire of UPDF marines, Special Forces elements, some units from the two Mountain Brigade and one brigade under Col.Owulo and Col. Jeff,” Col. Akiki stated.

The attack on a vacationing couple and a tour guide last month, suspected to be the work of ADF rebels, resulted in their tragic deaths and the destruction of their vehicle inside Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Security forces initiated a hunt for the assailants, and an operation involving UPDF Marine, Special Forces, and 222 and 301 Brigade infantry units was conducted.

The hunt and subsequent capture follow President Museveni’s promise that those responsible for the tourist’s attack would face severe consequences.
