The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has called upon special interest groups to ensure that they register with the electoral commission.
While addressing the press at the party headquarters (Uganda House) in Kampala on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, the UPC Spokesperson, Sharon, Arach commended the electoral commission for releasing the program and urged Ugandans under special interest groups (SIGs) to embrace the registration exercise if they are to contest for any position or vote under different categories.
“UPC wishes to remind the general public that to be eligible to participate in SIG elections as a voter or candidate, you must have registered in the Voters Register. The Party, therefore, encourages stakeholders to take all the electoral activities leading to the elections very seriously,” Arach said.
Arach also thanked the electoral commission for releasing a road map for special interest groups but also asked the commission to put in more effort in popularising these elections as it mobilizes and popularises the general elections.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) will conduct a nationwide identification and mapping of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) on the National Voters Register from Monday, November 4th, to November 13th, 2024, throughout the villages in the country ahead of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) elections next year.
The registration of youth who will participate in the youth leader’s elections will be in January 2025, from which elections for youth leaders from the grassroots to the Youth MPs will be held.
The constitution of Uganda creates five categories of special interest groups, which include the elderly, the youth, people with disabilities, workers, and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.
Other than the UPDF that has 10 MPs, each of the other Special Interest Group categories has five MPs representing the central region, western region, eastern region, and northern region, and one slot for the national female MP for each category.
