President Yoweri Museveni held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China on June 25, 2019 and agreed to lift their countries’ relationship to a comprehensive cooperative partnership.

The President of Uganda said that, Uganda will take the partnership as an opportunity to deepen cooperation with China.

He added that Uganda and China should strengthen communication and coordination in multilateral affairs such as those within the framework of the United Nations.

President Xi Jinping hailed the cooperation between the two countries citing mutual benefits. “At present, China-Uganda ties are at their best in history, as the political mutual trust has been continuously enhanced, realistic cooperation has yielded fruitful results, and the two sides maintain close collaboration in international and regional affairs,” he said.

Jinping said that China is willing to work with Uganda to promote the ties in the process of the joint building of the Belt and Road and the implementation of the outcomes of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit. He urged the two countries to continue to understand and support each other on issues related to core interests and major concerns.

Meanwhile, in a separate meeting with the Chinese foreign Minister Wang Yi, President Museveni also held talks about the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway SGR.

It is not officially clear whether China agreed to construct the SGR but raises hopes for the kick off of the long waited SGR once agrees to take it on. The hopes come as a result of the pledge by Wang Yi to help Uganda at every stage of development.
