Three Kibuku District Top Officials Remanded Over Extortion

Three top officials of Kibuku district have today, April 11, 2024, been charged with conspiracy to commit a felony by the Chief Magistrate Court in Kibuku and subsequently remanded to Budaka Government Prison.

The officials in question, Wamika Christopher, the District Education Officer; Nabirye Leticia, Senior Inspector of Schools; and Otem Stephen, Inspector of Schools, were arrested by the police working with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.

Marriam Natasha, State House Anti-Corruption Unit Spokesperson, said the arrests came after reports of extortion surfaced, with allegations that the accused officials were involved in forcing head teachers in the district to pay substantial sums of money.

The payments were purportedly for various activities, including capitation grants, student registrations for the Education Management Information System (EMIS), and other engagements that the schools had not participated in, Natasha said.

She added on to say that by holding those accountable for corrupt practices, authorities send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
