President Yoweri Museveni has advised Members of Parliament under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary caucus to desist from using personal funds to address their respective area challenges.

The President was addressing the caucus at the National Army Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi on Saturday, May 27, 2023, where he revealed that practice can lead to indebted leaders, which he considers a significant mistake and a potential threat.

He advised the MPs about the importance of promoting the NRM agenda for socio-economic transformation.

He added that they should rather advocate for active involvement of all households in producing goods or services that can be sold, thereby contributing to prosperity for all.

President Museveni emphasized government’s initiatives, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and other Wealth Creation programs, which aim at integrating all Ugandans into the money economy.

“You should encourage people to modernize their approaches and embrace contemporary methods of doing things, moving away from traditional practices,” he said.

President Museveni expressed satisfaction with the progress made in some regions where the NRM message of socio-economic transformation has been embraced, citing the example of the cattle corridor, where dairy farming has gained popularity, and Masaka which is known for its coffee cultivation, while Kalangala has embraced palm oil production.

He urged members to prioritize the politics of interest over the politics of identity, and emphasized that the former brings people together while the latter tends to divide them.

The President’s address highlighted the need for unity, economic transformation, and the effective implementation of government initiatives to drive Uganda’s development forward.

The retreat is under the theme “Securing Your Future,” primarily focusing on the active involvement of MPs in Wealth Creation programs and other pertinent issues.
